Newark Girl Wins Velvet Ice Cream’s
New Flavor Competition
Velvet Ice Cream’s newest flavor, chocolate covered strawberry, will soon be rolling into grocery stores, compliments of a strawberry loving 10-year-old from Newark, Ohio.
Rachel Hankinson is the winner of Velvet Ice Cream’s 2008 create-a-flavor contest. Rachel’s entry for chocolate covered strawberry ice cream was selected from the more than 850 entries submitted.
The Velvet Kids Club sponsored the competition, which was open to anyone between the ages of 6 and 13. Contest entrants submitted essays explaining their idea for the new flavor, and why they would be the ideal person to sit on the Velvet’s taste panel.
“We have been considering introducing a new, strawberry based ice cream, and Rachel really made the choice much easier for us,” said Velvet Vice President Luconda Dager. “She’s a creative little girl and we’re looking forward to getting this new flavor on the store shelves.”
For winning the contest, Rachel will receive free Velvet ice cream and a seat on the Velvet Ice Cream Tasting Panel for one year.
This is quite a perk for Rachel, who states in her entry that she would make an ideal panelist because, “I love ice cream.”
Rachel is home-schooled and a member of the Columbus Children’s Choir.
